Conference Overview
Over the last decade, the Eastern Community College Social Science Association (ECCSSA) has addressed transformational issues on the role of the social sciences. Topics included: information sharing; building a world community; curricula development; tolerance and humanity; creating a sustainable future; peace building and resolve; interdisciplinary collaborations; creativity and innovation; and exploring the leadership role of the social sciences.
This year, we are responding to a most immediate, pressing concern and focus, in the forefront of our collective consciousness and daily experiences—the economy and its national and global impact on human life and its quality.
The current economic crisis is reported to be similar to the aftermath of events that occurred at other signal points in history: the nadir of the Roman Empire; the French Revolution of 1789; the economic collapse following the War of 1812; the Panic of 1873; and, the Great Depression, to name a few.
Missing from our understanding of earlier historical events is a careful analysis of implications, current knowledge and awareness of the effects and impacts of this Great Recession, worldwide. These global impacts are significant in a fully integrated economic world. When one country is affected, there is a ripple effect in all other nations, including the most prosperous of countries. Yet, we are so busy responding to these crises and seeking remedies, that we fail to fully fathom their devastating and long-term impacts and consequences on human life—unemployment, homelessness, poverty, mental and physical health, and the overall quality of life. This is without mentioning that we are now in a period of the confluence of crises-- environmental, economic, political; and, overall, human.
This theme and dialogue for the 2011 conference will give ECCSSA and professionals in many fields, the opportunity to address our responsibilities and roles in our current positions in teaching, research, administration, applied practice, social and public policy development, nonprofit, grass-roots institutions and NGOs. Further, ECCSSA is calling for dialogue about the particular transitions and challenges faced in the current climate by higher education institutions and the communities they serve. Urgent focus also is requested for models and proposals relative to the conveyance of knowledge and information on human preparedness, essential skills development for survival, and the major transformations that will likely occur over the next decade in response to the current crisis.
ECCSSA invites social scientists, interested professionals, and those in related fields to join us in dialogue. We are calling for submission of proposals for presentation of papers and research, applied practice and policy recommendations. Conference presentation formats include individual, collaborative and panel discussions, roundtables and posters. Proposals will also be accepted for special pre-conference and conference sessions.
Special Call for Student Papers and Presentations
We encourage student submission of papers and other presentations including posters, paper and digital portfolios, web sites, and models. These student projects may be developed independently, in conjunction with a class assignment, or under instructor supervision.
ECCSSA traditionally and historically has been an organization that supports student scholarship. We strongly recommend Association members and teaching faculty to encourage student participation in the conference.
Student participants will have the opportunity to dialogue with conference participants about their work. Exemplary student presentations will be recognized. Guidelines for student and faculty papers and presentations can be found on the ECCSSA website at: www.eccssa.org.
