Assistant Professor of Geography
Barbara Crain hails from the University of Heidelberg where she graduated in
1979 with a double master’s in geography and English literature. She went on to
attain a secondary school teaching degree with the State of Bavaria in 1982
(M.Ed) in both disciplines. In 1998 she finished her M.S. in Environmental Science
with Johns Hopkins University. As her latest interest lies within the realm of
geography/ecology, she has been taking course work in biology.
Barbara Crain taught primarily geography, geology and also German for the
University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Europe for eight years.
Once in the United States she became an administrator for UMUC working
on faculty recruitment for both its Asia and Europe divisions. In addition she
taught geography and environmental science courses at Johns Hopkins University
as well as other institutions. In 1998 she developed a 6-credit multi-disciplinary
online course on Global Environmental Change which started an online teaching
career. Since 2006 she has been an Assistant Professor with Northern Virginia
Community College teaching geography and geology courses in the classroom
and online.
